Icy Lake McDonald

I made my way back out to Lake McDonald this morning, only to find that the western end of the lake near Apgar village had frozen within the last few weeks. Since temperatures have been near 0° for the last week (and were -20°F this morning) I guess freezing makes sense. So I tried to make use of the patterns in the ice to lead into the scene for this image:

1) Mountain and ice prior to sunrise

2) And for fun I placed my camera onto the ice in a little gap along the shore for this one. The focus blend is still kind of a mess but should look OK for web display.

As always, any thoughts are welcome.

I love the look of the scene in the first image. Speaks volumes about N. Montana in mid winter. I am delighted that you went out in these conditions to shoot it so we can vicariously see the view of what Real Cold(TM) looks like without the rest of the sensory inputs that accompany being out there.

I'd be willing to bet that by now a day that went up to freezing would feel like summer to you.

It's been really cold here in CO, but the forecast low of -17 turned out to be "only" -11 this morning. I have been staying inside.

Always look forward to your posts because I can almost always count on an involuntary 'Oh!' escaping my lips when I first bring your post up. This one was no exception That 1st shot is so sublime on the contrast and colors which allows the excellently crafted composition to really stand out. Great work! Nothing wrong with the 2nd one either, but it is being overshadowed for me by that first shot. Where are you going to hang that 1st one up!?!?
