Icy Anna

Looking through some shots I took with my old 100-400mm lens and noted that I have quite a few wintertime shots of the Anna's Hummingbirds that hang out around our house for our feeders. The little birds are a lot easier to spot in the trees when the branches are bare so no surprise I shoot them more often during the winter months. This one was right after a storm with freezing rain in 2021 and the original was a bit on the soft side so I decided to see what it would look like with a rework.

Now, that's really different Alan! It's cool to see that ice on the branches and the hummingbird that must be frozen to the branch!

Thanks Jim - these little birds are quite hardy and stick around all winter in far worse conditions than this. This was after the freezing rain storm broke up but not quite above freezing yet to thaw everything out. Most of the ice was gone by the end of the day as this type of weather is quite unusual for the west side of the Cascades.

Definitely unusual to find Anna's hanging around where there is ice. Nice capture Alan
Thanks Alan - the unusual part of the image is actually the fact that we had freezing rain in Vancouver Washington :) The Anna's here don't migrate at all and stick around no matter what we get. We usually get at least one snow event each winter but they rarely last long and I have captures of these little hummers hanging out on branches above the snow not far from our feeders.
