IC1396 The Elephant's Trunk Nebula

I think they are both neat images but for different reasons - the second one grab me just because I can see the wider scene but the first one has some neat details up close. Do I have to choose? :)

How interesting Ed! And you reminded me that I did capture IC 1396 about 2 weeks ago, and just haven't gotten around to processing it. :)

As someone who has enjoyed just how unique and cool the Elephant Trunk is, I really like the close up crop in #1. But I think in terms of overall beauty #2 has it all. I think I had shot it too tight when I did, so I enjoy seeing your #2, and how you have that composed.

As for the processing? I really like it! I am not sure I would call it sinister. It is darker, but I am really digging those black/orange tones. The orange has just enough yellow to it, that it almost feels like it's on fire! I think you scored with the processing.

Hi,

I like both, but as stated above, there is a lot of other interesting detail that is not part of the 'trunk' that gets cropped out in the close up version you first posted. For me, I like seeing that wider area. I do not have any issues with how you have processed the close in crop though - it looks good. I also shot this and while I like my own result I wish I had gotten more of the surroundings too - lots going on right around this object.
