Hunts Mesa sunrise

Hi Bob. I like this very much. The intensity of the sunrise colour has a dynamic effect asnd seems to be spreading over the shadowed buttes. I have been to MV 3 times but have never taken this trip. It really does look worthwhile from this shot!

A truly fine way to start out the day - very captivating image.

A view I would like to see myself one day.

Hey Bob,

I have been up to Hunts Mesa a few years back, it's an amazing location with an amazing kind of crazy drive into it.

I like what you have done here, it's an unforgettable view.

But I would make 2 suggestions. First I would brighten up the whole image as it feels a bit too dark especially if there is light actually hitting those buttes, the ground should be brighter. I would use a layer mask to protect where the sun is hitting those buttes as the red channel is as bright as it can go there. 2nd, on the ground layer, I would decrease the red just a bit by adding some cyan. The buttes will still glow red, but this allows the surrounding areas to help be separated a bit more. All of that with the idea to give this more depth. I am sure the reds were going crazy that morning, but the way the camera has captured them, it almost causes the ground layer to feel flatter then it should.

If you want I can do a couple of edits off of your jpg to give you an example of what I am thinking.

That's great! Before I post then, just so I know how detailed to go with some tips, how much experience do you have with Layer Masks in Photoshop?

Hey Bob,

Yes, I guess I don't have to upload my edit, I think you pretty well nailed it! You brightened it up some, and looks like you pulled a bit of red and yellow out of the ground layer, and both adjustments really help to give depth to this image.

Very nice work on the edit! Two thumbs up from me. :)

I am very comfortable using layer masks in Photoshop.

Beautiful image, Bob, tho I don't see much difference between the two shown.

What did it cost you to have guides allow your own vehicle up there? How did that work out with the tribe?

Hey Jeffrey, not sure what happened with the edit on Bobs beginning thread. But if you click on the Thumbnail at the bottom of his post, and then click left and right between the two images, you will see quite a difference.

Jeffrey,
The cost was the same if you drive your vehicle or drive in their vehicle. It was $250/person you must have a minimum of 5 people. The other 4 were in the Navajo's vehicle. I must say the drive is only for very experienced 4WD drivers with a very good vehicle. I drive a lifted 4-runner with heavy duty oversized mud tires. Drive was much fun if your into that kind of thing.

These images are fantastic, but they make me think of a location I cannot get to considering the drive there. The transition of colors are beautiful on the mesas.

Yeah, I was afraid I would find that out. I'll support the Navajo Nation to some degree but that is thievery. I once paid $400 for two of us to have a private guide to explore and camp in the back country of MV. The scene at the 'guide station' at the View lot was nothing but greedy exploitation of tourists. How long were you there for? Did you camp there? Thanks!

Stayed overnight just one night. I must say in defense of the charge the Navajo's did provide dinner and breakfast. The road also takes it toll on their vehicles I imagine their vehicles don't last long.
