Hiking Coyote Buttes North

This is from my February trip to the wave. We did the hike in as quickly as possible to get some time alone, but spent a little more time coming back to shoot some of the formations along the way.

Between the pointy spires and the foreground rocks this seemed like a good place to stop. Any thoughts are welcome. If anyone is interested I've written a full blog post about that day here.

The stones in the foreground almost look like paving stones. I like the contrasts of all the lines in the formations.

Very cool indeed Kyle! I agree with Alan, it looks like pavement stones leading back to the candy swirls. This is for sure worth stopping for.

This is very nice. I have wondered what else was in there besides the wave. I guess that's a pretty hard hike compared to White Pocket.

This is a very nice rendition of this location, Kyle. I took a buddy of mine (Willard Clay) to this location. He was a full-time nature photographer and I was still teaching so we went in May at the end of the spring semester. At that time it was easy to get permits (1990's): you just had to go to the BLM office in Kanab and pick one up. So on the way into the Wave, he looks at this scene and decides to shoot it. But he doesn't like the foreground and is looking for something to place as foreground interest. He finds a large log and asks me to help him carry it and place it where he wants. When he gets it set he asks me what I think of the composition. So I look under the hood of his 4x5 and I don't like it because it looks fake. After all, It's a large log in an area that has no large trees visible. But he says he likes it and decides to shoot it.

I figured it would never get published, but lo and behold it shows up in an Arizona Highways calendar several years later. Your rendition is much better.

Great shot, but I can easily picture it in vertical, I think it would help these amazing textures in the FG point towards the swirly rocks. concentrating the view a bit more and probably have the added benefit of leaving bit more room to breath in the sky as well. Of course, not having been there and then, it is all speculation So easy to say things from your chair!
