Heather, North Yorkshire

My wife and I spent a couple of days in Yorkshire photographing the heather. It is earlier than usual but more surprisingly, the bracken and many trees are already showing signs of Autumn. Peak Autumn colours here are usually in the first week of November so this is extremely early. This summer has been the hottest since records began and is looking like the driest with 3/4 of England officially in drought. The early Autumn colours may just be stress due to these extreme conditions. Anyway the good news, the heather was wonderful although there were patches that had already flowered and was dying back. Interesting - with all those clouds it's almost hard to believe things are in drought conditions. The heather looks quite nice.
The first rain for weeks fell on Tuesday night, this was Tuesday afternoon. I got caught in a thunderstorm on Wednesday. Our thunderstorms are far less dangerous than yours, usually sheet lightening and not fork but sudden winds and heavy rain just like your storms.
