Happy Birthday Ben! You are Missed.

Today would have been Ben's 83rd birthday.

I don't think a day goes by that I don't think about Ben and what he meant as a friend and as a part of our community here. Take a moment and offer up a thought or prayer in memory of our good friend and inspiration.

Although I never met Ben in person I came to love and respect him because of his kindness and skill as a photographer. I think of him every day when I visit this site. I wish he had lived long enough for me to finally meet hm in person.

I am in the middle of a photo salvage job for Salvage Saturday (his baby) of an image from just below the Maze Overlook from 1975. I was a young 25 year old grad student when I got to help catalog the rock art down in the Maze. The Maze area as it turned out was Ben's last big Bucket List venue to visit and I was impressed at his level of motivation to make the journey at his age. We discussed that area of Utah quite a number of times before he made the trip. I can only hope I still have that level of motivation when I make it to his age when he passed.

Today I returned from a photo trip that took me past Ben's hometown and on to one of his favorite places, Schwabacher Landing in the Tetons. I got skunked with poor conditions, all the while visualizing Ben's superb images from that location. Just couldn't match his results. Maybe next time, maybe never. Happy Birthday Ben!

When I got my FJ Cruiser, Ben told me he had no desire to "off-road" but he eventually took to it, if not for the off-roading experience itself, for the places it could take him to for unique photography. Actually, I think he was already "off-roading" and overlanding (I think he called it camping) but not on the technical trails yet. In recent years, he got into the astro-stuff. He was always seeking new areas to explore and I benefited from his immersion into whatever he was into. He is missed.
