Earlier this month I visited North Carolina for the first time to attend a wedding. Since my parents are retired now, they followed me to the east coast. After the wedding, we took a road trip to Great Smoky Mountains National Park where we were impressed by how green and lush the Appalachian Mountains are. We even got to walk on the Appalachian Trail. We mainly stuck to Newfound Gap Road and saw the most popular areas like Clingman's Dome and Newfound Gap. We also drove the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail on the Tennessee side of the park. I saw this adventure as a scouting trip; there are plenty of good spots for sunrise/sunset viewing, and next time I visit I'll get accommodations closer to the park or inside.
