Grand Tetons

A few days ago in the Grand Tetons in Wyoming, after I was done with the morning timelapses and I had thawed my fingers out a bit, I went out with my D7100 IR camera and captured this scene from the Teton Point Overlook. I thought the scattered trees would turn out great in IR, and they did.

This is a 590nm IR that is channel swapped.

One thing with landscape IR that is taking me a bit to get used to is the soft edges that IR brings in. At least at this point in my IR journey I don't know how to make the edges sharper, other then shooting wider then needed and then cropping. It also doesn't seem to always do it, so that can make it a bit hard. I liked this composition as it was, and I couldn't shoot any wider so I just have to come to accept the slightly softer edges.

All comments are welcome,

Jim

I don't see soft edges. This is a really nice image, one of your best IR IMO. I like the way the trees and parts of the mountains render as orange red.

Thanks Ben, I applied extra sharpening on the edges to try and help it.

I am glad you liked this. I had been doing a lot of images recently where I didn't channel swap, but this one really looked cool this way I thought. I liked how the trees in the ground layer lead in to the back.

I like this with the channels swapped. I think the dark sky is a nice contrast to the snow cover. Any chance that some of the Topaz tools (Denoise AI/Sharpen AI) can bring in more detail?

Thanks Alan, yeah the channel swap looked good I thought.

As to those Topaz options, I don't know if they could help because I don't have them. :) I only have Topaz Clarity and Texture.

Great composition. I'm not a fan of color IR, so this just looks weird to my eye, but I'd like to see a B&W conversion.

Thanks Jim. Yeah, for years I didn't care for IR and it's look but for some reason, now I do. :)

I have already started a B&W conversion of this, maybe with a bit of a crop so it's not exactly the same, but it does look good in B&W.

Jim I am sure that you realise that the focus of visible light and ir light is not the same. If the conversion only lets through ir then the image should be sharp but if the conversion allows significant amounts of visible light then some blurring will occur. Edges will highlight this problem. Please note that I do not have an ir converted camera and this is all theoretical. Ken

Hey Ken, I did know there was visible ight and IR light, but I never heard the relationship like you described it. I really appreciate that description, that makes sense.

Hey Craig!

It's awesome to have you drop in here, it's been a while. Amy has done a fantastic job with leading a bunch of us down the IR path, but the beginnings I think were set in place from you. It was your IR photos several years ago that I think started to open my eyes to the fun of IR.

I appreciate your kind comments. I was hoping for some nice IR from up at Grand Teton, but as an IR novice, I had no idea what to expect. So I was pleasantly suprised with how they turned out.

Please share some of your recent work if you have time, it would be really great to see it again here. :)
