After battling the Bay Area's brutal afternoon traffic jam for an hour, I finally arrived at my local park where a family of white-tailed kites has nested.
The fledglings grow quickly, with the father kite flying further afield to hunt for voles and squirrels. As evening drew in, I could hear the coarse calls of the young kites echoing through the park. Suddenly, the father kite swooped in, dinner - a vole - clutched in his talons.
The kids swiftly took to the sky, their father patiently hovering in mid-air as they tried to grab their meal. It took the young kite three attempts to secure the dinner; usually, it only takes two.
This family has five siblings, and so far, only three have been fed for the day. I can hear the frustrated calls from another unfed sibling echoing around the park. Watching this spectacle unfold before my eyes is truly fascinating.
