The fall colors were gone in the Midwest, they were gone in the Rockies, but as I traveled through Utah a week ago, I caught the last gasps of fall.
It was stormy, and while driving down the I-15 I caught a glimpse of gold shining in the darkness. It required a U-Turn of 2 miles to get back to it. But it was shorter than the 16 mile U-Turn I had made an hour earlier that resulted in no photos taken because it didn't look as good once I got back to it. So the 2 miles seemed like a much better price to pay for falls last gleam.
There were several isolated cottonwoods around there. This one I actually passed it up as I thought the better ones were a little further down the side road. But this caught my eye, and I decided I would stop back here on the way back to the Freeway. As it was, this was the one I liked best. I had to wait a few minutes as the sun was poking through the rain clouds periodically. But it didn't take too long, before the sun poked through and lit the gold on fire. It lasted for a minute and then it was gone, just like me as I still had 6 hours to go to get back to SoCal.
I also thought that this might look good in a 4:5 format crop. But when I did so, it then lost the light source that can be seen in the upper clouds at the top. So I am not sure on the idea of a crop.
