After following the thread on the Post processing forum about how DXO Pure Raw is handling shadows pushed, I processed this image from Death Valley. The shadows here are pushed 2 stops. ACR made a mess of the shadows with real ugly noise in the shadows. The SOOC image had the entire ground layer as pitch black. This was taken with a 5D Mark III not known for great DR.

That's a lot of layers of mountain ridges you managed to tease out of this shot. Nice colors on the horizon. Where in DV did you shoot this from?

I have had some amazing luck pushing almost black shadows back into the visible range after PureRAW cleanups. Knowing I can recover shadows this dark really makes it easier to obey the expose-to-the-right mantra since all I have to do to get a good exposure is make sure I don't blow out the brights. I used to care more about how far into the dark my shadows were before deciding how to expose my shots.

Did you use Enhanced Mode in ACR for the NR? I haven't seen it making a mess of things before. It's always been spot on clean for me.

I do like your result, you didn't say which version of PureRaw you were using on this? I found from Alan, that my versions are both PureRaw3.

Thanks Jim. No I didn’t use the enhance mode in ACR. I should probably try that. I tried using this a while ago and found it to be very slow - sometime of the order of minutes.

I am on Pure Raw 4.

The Enhanced mode is very slow, that's it's worst issue. But if you are going to compare the NR from ACR with PureRaw4, then you need to compare Apples to Apples which would be the Enhanced Mode of ACR.

PureRawX is much much faster then then it's Equivalent the Enhanced NR in ACR. It's why I spent a lot of time last summer testing it for my timelapses, as it adds up over 1600 to 2000 images for my timelapses. But I ended up going back to ACR because of inconsistencies in PureRaw. But Alan has shown me that the new upcoming version of PureRaw might finally take a big enough step that I will get it and try it again.
