Doll house 2

Doll House 2 is one of three camp grounds in the Doll house area of the Maze. It's a long way from pavement and only one mile from the end of the road. We spent our first night here and I am showing the sunrise from the next morning.

1. Sunrise.

That looks like it would be a great Milky Way location Ben! Those would be some awesome rock spires to have with the MW rotating behind them!

I like your sunrise, Since the sun is poking through into the scene, I would think it would be brighter though. But it still has a very nice look to it.

I like how the clouds are radiating out behind the towers in #2, and of course what a cool campsite. Is Rick sitting back by his FJ?

It would be interesting to have Rick comment on these too and maybe add some additional backstory.

Fun set - especially the really nice sunrise in the first image. The second image worked out quite well too.
Thanks Alan.

Really nice set, Ben. Your camping site looks great too.
Thanks Douglas, thats a great place to camp too.

Thanks Jim, I exposed for the sun and had to raise the foreground 2 stops. A single image however and no flare. That is a really neat campsite, protected from wind and sun.

As far as MW, you are pointing due east here and those spires are really high, so not a good view to the south from here.

Thanks John.

Thanks Monica. Sounds like you have been there. Rick and I talked about your Happy Valley posts, and we saw a turn off to Happy Valley at the top of the Flint Trail. We went down it but on the way home we drove out via Hite.
You must have been on the eastern part of Poison Spring. A former neighbor of mine rode that on his moto years ago & still raves about it. You'll have to go to Happy Canyon another time. Sounds like Jim Fox wants to go. I wonder if Happy Valley is what Happy Canyon turns into?

You mentioned crossing the Dirty Devil in waders, did you also drive across?

No. I left Poison Spring Rd about 11 miles in & took the Black Jump Rd along the base of the Wingate until it ended as a footpath. Then walked along it until the track went down to the Dirty Devil. I could see where Poison Spring Rd crossed the Dirty Devil from one of the campsites along the road.

I have seen videos of people crossing the Dirty Devil. Some people use that as an entrance to the Maze.

Straight East would be perfect to let the Milky Way arch above those spires. What's to the south there?

Jim, I consider the drive to the Doll house too arduous for a milky way. That said, Doll House 3 would be the better choice, I will show scenes from there as I get them finalized.

There is a hike from Doll House 1 or 2 (which are close together), that leads to the Colorado River at Spanish Bottom. This trail is supposed to offer good views and may work for a Milky Way, but my hip was in such bad shape I could hardly walk so I did not attempt it.

Jim, yep that's me. This was our first campsite on this trip which started from Hanksville to Hans Flat, down the Flint Trail (condition: rough - we were told they were going to grade that section of the road the coming week), and through Teapot Canyon to the Dollhouse. We arrived at Hans Flat about 8 am. We arrived at the Dollhouse sometime after 5 pm (I think). I was wiped. Later that morning, I was getting out of the chair, lost my balance and fell back into it. The chair collapsed sideways on me and I fell to the ground. Ben tried to save me but to no avail. Got a great view of the undercarriage of my FJ. I didn't hurt anything on me but I tossed the chair in the first dumpster I came across after leaving the park.

The first time we did this trail, I was on 35" tires. This time, I had 37s. There was a lot of micro off-camber spots and with the bigger tires, there was more space to rock back and forth on two tires. At check in, the ranger showed us pictures of jeeps that had tumped over on their sides and had to be hauled out. This and the new off-camber feel got into my head which probably contributed to the slow going (and my fatigue). Ben said I appeared more cautious this time out.

Both of us sleep in our vehicles which is fortunate because the trip involved some high winds making tent sleeping miserable although it was somewhat calm this morning and 62 degrees.

The Dollhouse has three campsites all with their own character (obviously). Dollhouse 2 is my favorite overall based on view and camping conditions. Dollhouse 3 has a more wide open view and is somewhat exposed but it offers a grand vista of the Dollhouse and a grand view of points East and South. Dollhouse 1 & 2 are nestled within the Dolls while Dollhouse 3 is between 1/4 to 1/2 of a mile away as the crow flies (just guessing).

Ben's pics are spectacular but I failed to be alert at the crucial moment to get Sun stars. 😥 I haven't had a chance to look at my images yet but I expect to like them pretty much.
