Crown Point in the Columbia River Gorge

On Wednesday I wandered up the Gorge and happily it was a day with light winds so I could actually fly around a bit to compose my shots. Near the mouth of the Gorge the winds can be a serious problem when the weather kicks up. In this case I visited Rooster Rock State Park on the Oregon side of the river and got some nice views of the Crown Point overlook looking back at the viewpoint. I was just under 400' elevation with my drone looking up at Crown Point to give you a feel for the height of the basalt cliffs in the Gorge.

One of a kind view of crown point
Thanks Ben - I have shot from that viewpoint on many occasions as it was one of the better views of the Gorge along with Cape Horn on the Washington side of the river. It's really neat to be able to get almost the same viewing elevation of the Gorge from anywhere I can launch there.

I like that side lighting Alan, it really adds depth to this.
Thanks Jim - direct lighting on the cliff faces only happens during summer months when the sun angles are much farther north. In the winter a sunny day makes it very hard to shoot since the Oregon side of the Gorge is in almost constant shadow.

Nice. Don't believe I have ever seen this from this vantage point.
Thanks Jameel - there really isn't a good ground based vantage point for this scene other than from the Washington side of the Columbia with a long lens and clear skies. I launched from a state park that is between the freeway and the river and then used a telephoto lens at just under 400'. Most of the time the air is too hazy for a good view from the Washington side so I have been exploring what all I can do from parks on the Oregon side keeping my distance from the No Fly zones in the waterfall corridor. I don't think you could get close enough for this view of Crown Point using a 24mm lens and still have VLOS.
