I had been reading about this comet for some time, but the challenge of waking up before dawn to see if it was clear enough to shoot it was just proving too much for me. But this morning, with our shift to summer time, dawn was at a more sociable hour so I checked the sky at around 5am and decided it was worth a go. Glad I went! I have not really shot a comet before, so this was a learning experience for me.

Oh man James!!! You nailed it! I like what you got.

I got the Samyang 135mm about 3 years ago and still haven't used it.

Congrats on getting this. I keep looking into this one, but have has either clouds or life getting in the way. I might have to wait until it comes back and is visible after sunset in a few weeks.

Thanks!
I had been dithering about getting this lens for a while, and was making do with my 70-200 zoom instead, but it's a) very heavy and b) not quite as fast so when I saw B&H had a sale on it, and that it was available with Canon EF mount, I went for it (though not before buying a used Canon 135 f/2 on a NZ trading site that, when it arrived, turned out to be faulty so back it went). I'm very happy with the Rokinon though, and am glad I got to use it so soon after its arrival!

Congratulations on a fantastic shot! I'm just hoping to see it later this month when it becomes an evening object here in the UK; although its going to be a challenge as its so low in the sky. Here's hoping!

Really wonderful capture! I am trying to figure out how to capture this in the next few days, either from here in CO or remotely from AZ where my larger astro gear is located.

James,

Can you elaborate a little bit on what your shooting settings were? I take it you used the Rokinon 135 f/2. Was it wide open? Was this a single frame? What type of exposure(s) did you use for this?

Thanks bunches,

ML

So sorry for the delay in responding! This is a stack of about 10 frames, each shot with the Rokinon at f/2.2 (one stop less than wide open) at 5 seconds and ISO 3200.
