Cloud River at Dusk

Life has been extremely busy this past year but I have tried to make time to capture images. Scouted a new place that looked promising and headed out one afternoon after work recently when weather conditions showed some potential promise as storms had come and gone and were to come again this date. It was a bit of a gamble, a 1.5 hr drive however I was looking for drama in the sky and got it both above and below. The previous rain was being sucked up into a low cloud layer above the river and the clouds above were giving some fantastic light. As the evening wore on, the clouds below rose up and the sky turned everything a lovely reddish hue. As I sat here, at different spots at this excellent overlook, things just became more and more dramatic with these red and purple hues. I will show 3 images, taken within a 10 minute span from earliest to last captured as the evening wore on. My preference is the 2nd but I would love to hear yours. The first two with slightly different comps and the last one with probably the most dramatic light from the upper overlook (you can see, barely, behind the small pine the overlook I was at on the first 2). Hope you enjoy!

Location: Cumberland Plateau in TN, Scotts Gulf with the Collins River below the clouds.

I love the colors and drama of the skies in #2 and #3 but the composition in the first one with the low clouds in the river valley winding off into the horizon keeps my attention longer. Great set - must have been a nice evening.

Very cool work Jon. It's fun to get to new places!

I think #1 is my favorite, and then #2. I really like that low level fog.

The magenta seems a bit heavy in #3, otherwise I like the composition.

#3 for me. I agree with Jim that it is a touch too magenta but the overall feel of the image is still my favourite. The sky in #2 has nice colours but the contrast is lacking. #3 has small patches of brightness that keeps me looking around. It must have been wonderful watching this evolve. Ken

Thank you Jim. I agree on #3 and I have struggled with this as from memory, the whole area turned this crazy color but it just doesn't seem real in post. I may re work this.

Thank you! I appreciate your feedback and I may re-work both of these :)
