Clearing Fog at Sunrise Made my Day

We arrived late at our lodging, me having broke the rental's radiator on an unmade road :(. The tow truck dumped us, with all our gear, at night.

The next morning I got up before dawn to get some shots of sunrise in the cold. As it lightened I saw.......... FOG!

All that way from London for one of our very own Scotch Mists! As it was rising, I hung about in hopes - to be rewarded with a clearance......

.....and finally, the sun broke through :)

Martin - The second works best for me, lovely light. I imagine looking up at the mitten from below with that fog would be a shot. To bad about the radiator and all...

As usual I am going to be a contrary and state my preference for that first image with the low clouds. That's not the usual view everyone shoots of this scene. If that were my capture I might be inclined to lighten up the exposure a bit to bring out a few more details in the shadows.

Sweet set, Martin! I'm with Alan....the low hanging fog makes a very unusual atmo for Monument Valley! Nicely done!

Hey Martin,

All 3 of these are different enough to be special all on their own. I think #1 though is my favorite because it's the most different then we would normally see from Monument Valley.

And your story about the broken radiator definitely sounded much more funny in person! :)

I like this set, if you have a vehicle next time, drive down to the road and try to get on the other side of it.

Thanks Zeph. The second one was my first choice; but I posted the others to give it some perspective. My disappointment on looking out in the dark to see dense fog was palpable but anyway, the light chased the fog backwards and forwards and the light was very active all morning. The day before had been a disaster We sat in Valley of the Gods for an hour before anyone showed up - and then they were JOGGERS!

Hey Alan. As a picture, I agree with you about lightening the lower part - and I have done that in fact. The darker version was needed to support the back story and express disappointment. That you like it is a bonus!

Oh, I can add, if anyone can break a radiator, it's Martin. Didn't you have a rental adventure last time in PNW?

Martin, so happy to see you're out there in another of your elements. The series is nicely done. Only once, on a cold February day with snow, did I have some good fortune there.

Nice job.

Love that first image. Most excellent! Clouds adding mystery to the monuments and what may lay on top. Perhaps Airwolf is ascending from one. :p

Nice series, Martin, from that popular spot. How does one break a radiator?!
My bad, Jeffrey. I moved to avoid a pothole on the unmade road in and went into a small trench on the other side of the road, which had an invisible rock in it - crunch! Smelled immediately that we couldn't go further, so we sat and waited!

Very good series of photos.
Thanks, Bob. A great location that I have enjoyed on every visit!

Martin,
Very interesting set and story. I started carrying a sat phone now when I'm going where there is no reception in more remote locations. I like all the images. #2 with the light speaks to me the most.
Do you have any of the 2nd with just the lit mitten in the rear and the bute with nothing cut off.
