Can't Slow Down

It's funny that this bird (I still need to ID it), took off, skimmed over the lake for about 30 feet then came in for a landing. But what was weird to me was that it was running on the water as it slowed down. I thought it would have just landed on it's belly. But then I am not a birder, so I don't know much about bird behaviors.

Captured last Tues in Northern Colorado.

The same image, cropped 2 ways. I like them both for different reasons.

I have seen this type of landing quite often when we have a lot of winter visitors in the local waterways. The avian equivalent of a runway :)

Thanks Alan. While I have seen my share of birds I guess, I haven't seen lot's to take offs and landings. And I guess I haven't paid that much attention when I did.
