That's a great B&W Joe! Good thinking. It is a strong composition to start with, but having the well defined whites and blacks make this shine.

Here is the back story to the monument

Monument Seru Largu
The monument was put here in 2000 by the Council of Churches, as a Millennium Monument. It is a tribute to the Virgin Mary, a beautiful white crucifix on a beautiful yellow foot beneath a statue of Mary. The base contains the words ‘Semper Kristu Ayera Awe’, or Christ Yesterday, Today and Always’. This cross is visible from the whole island.

Definitely think the B&W is the stronger. As Jim said, the tonal range is perfect. Very powerful image
