Best of 2024

I was able to get away from the hectic life of a retiree for a few short trips this year. I have been slowly transitioning to mirrorless Nikons, selling my DSLRs and F mount lenses, with the goal of creating a much lighter kit for hiking. So far, so good.

1. Shiprock, NM on a windy spring day. 10 stop ND filter to slow down the clouds.

2. White Sands National Park. The winds were just killer in April, so I tried some closer distance telephoto shots, making multiple images and focus stacking in post.

3. San Jose Badlands, near Cuba, New Mexico. Had to wait for a storm to pass through, but afterward had some nice, puffy clouds to play around with.

The International Car Forest of the Last Church, near Goldfield, Nevada, is place where all humans can worship irreverence, insanity, and inexplicable art. 12 stops of ND for the sky.

5. The unmistakable face of Face Rock - Bandon, Oregon. Somedays you don't get the great color for sunset, but the layers of clouds can still be photogenic at times.

6. The Devil's Garden, Escalante, Utah. A great place to celebrate the new moon amongst this group of hoodoos!

7. Mt. Whitney Sunrise - Lone Pine, California. Taken within the Alabama Hills Recreation Area, the good light came and went quickly on this day, but I was more than happy with this shot. I'd been there before and experienced either full cloud cover or boring blue skies, I felt pretty good having finally got a keeper during sunrise.

8. Just a minute or two after the previous image, I got this wider shot looking slightly more to the south. Lone Pine Peak showing how sharp the ridges can be on the eastern Sierra peaks!

9. Bandon, Oregon. My favorite spot on the west coast. On this day we did get a bit of color for sunset. There are always photographers around for sunsets and you could just feel the joy we all got from the color show.

10. Made just a minute or so after the previous image, Face Rock getting a warm back glow, with a sweet reflection from the receding tidewater. The perfect end to the day!

Happy New Year everyone!

Hectic retirement you say? You know you are really retired when you start wondering how you ever found time for work 😁

Sounds like some fun road time. Your Mt. Whitney sunrise is seriously printworthy and the main standout for my eyes. #1, #2, #5, and #10 are close behind. #10 with Facerock in silhouette is a good example of why so many photographers spend time in Bandon.

These are really awesome Michael! You had some really great trips. Bandon is also my favorite place along the Oregon coast. It's nice to know that I am not the only one.

Stellar work, Michael. You should be proud of these photographs, I would be. Only because we were asked to choose our favorites, #2 and #7

Beautiful set of landscapes. #2 is my clear favorite - it is both simple and complex and I can spend a lot of time lingering over it. I really like the light in #7 and the combination of elements in #9 as well.

Thank you all, I appreciate your comments! It looks like #7 is gone be the favorite here - that one did require some planning to pull off, but luck was also a big factor!

Wonderful set Michael. You found good light and nice skies throughout the year. Here is to more of the same.
Thanks Jameel, I was lucky a lot. The good light and nice skies move around a lot and I feel like I'm having to chase it all over. I wish you the same for this new year! And more chances to get out and find it.

Thanks Mike! I got more chances to get away on photo specific travels last year and that made a big difference. I highly recommend retiring!
