Benita

Meet Benita, she is a wild Mulee living on the range in Cold Creek, about 40 minutes outside of Las Vegas. We figure her to be around 30 years old. She was actually gathered by the BLM back in 2007 or so, and they let her go. She has been alone for the last year & a half, but when this picture was taken, she had found a new family to protect. The BLM bait trapped 238 of our wild horse herd back in Aug 2015 due to drought & they were starving. We talked them into leaving her on the range, as after being out there that long she deserves to die on the range, not in a holding facility.

I have been privileged to document this herd in photographs since 2009, and I still try to get up there as much as possible, to keep the documentation going. This is where my photography heart is, with the wild ones.

Hi Darcy,

What a cool mission you have with them. And that is awesome they have let Benita stay wild.

This is a cool photo also, nicely taken. So how wild is Benita? Can she be approached at all?

No when you get close enough she lets out a bray that will send you running :). She is very very wary & even if you get to close to whatever family she decides is hers, she will let you know it!

Nice, I have a similar shot somewhere,,, Thanks for your work with documenting and just being aware of the wild horse / mule situation. It's to bad the cows get all the priority...
