Astro Mod: Full frame or APS-C bodies ?

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to get some advice from the more experienced members here as I take my first steps into deep-space astrophotography.

I currently have three camera bodies in my kit:

  • Pentax K-mount body
  • Sony NEX-5
  • Sony A7R II (Full-frame)
I am itching to get one of these bodies astro-modified before diving deeper into the hobby. Given that I am a complete beginner when it comes to telescopes and deep-space imaging, I’m trying to figure out the smartest route.

Does it make sense to commit my full-frame Sony A7R II to an astro-modification, or would modding an older Pentax body (or even the NEX-5) be a better and more forgiving starting point?

I want to make sure I'm asking the right questions here, so any guidance, pros/cons, or recommendations would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks,

Oliver

Full frame sensors are way better at night then AP-C, so right off the bat, eliminate any thought of converting over a AP-C camera.

I would go with the Sony A7R II to convert.
