Astoria, Oregon

We spent New Years Eve in the wonderful town of Astoria, OR. According one Art Wolfe, the oldest city on the West coast. Not going to argue with Art! Anyway, the scenery, eating and hiking was delicious. The bridge is several miles long, spanning the Columbia River and connection NW Oregon with SW Washington. Lots of shipping activity on the River. And a cool walkway along the wharfs and piers. And some funky stores.

Hey Michael,

That is a fun town, I have been there a few times, and my favorite part was driving on that bridge. Not sure why but I love driving on bridges, and that one is so long, it made it extra special.

You have a great series of images. My favorites are #2 and 4.

Neat images of the place. I especially like the nighttime shots of the Meglar Bridge and the view down Pier 11. For the record the bridge is 4 miles long.

Across the street from the Maritime Museum is an inconspicuous brown building that is an extension of Oregon State University called the Duncan Law School of Seafood. In the early 2000's they ran seafood cooking classes every few weeks where everyone got to participate in cooking up a seafood dinner and then having a feast on it. My wife and I used to sign up for one class per month at the first of the year when they would announce the menus and then spend the night in Astoria. OSU pulled the plug on the classes 2008 which was too bad as they were a lot of fun. The chef (Eric Jenkins) who ran the classes is not the head chef for the Buoy 10 brewery.

I love #5, really cool vibe on that one!

Funky is the perfect word to describe Astoria, if you stand perfectly still in Astoria, moss will grow on you. The downtown area is a cool place to spend an afternoon walking around in the rain. And don't forget to check out the Lightbox Gallery whenever you're there!

Have only been in Astoria and would love to return. Maybe one day when Trump stops bullying Canada over tariffs. Our Canadian peso doesn’t go too far in the US these days either.
