Arches Without an Arch

When I was in Arches a few weeks ago, one thing I focused on was images without arches in them. This is one from the Garden of Eden area. I liked it in color, but thought that converting the 590nm IR to B&W also worked well.

This worked out quite well as a B&W. At a glance the pinion in front almost reminds me of a teddy bear cholla.

Arches is a great park for a myriad of shapes of sandstone. When I first visited there in the 80s, I was struck by the number of rock spires and fins on a massive scale. Sure the arches are great but even if they weren't there at all it would still be a great park for its classic desert landscapes. And the IR 's characteristic darker skies and lighter foliage enhance the feeling!

Wow Jim that is very nice, thanks for sharing this great image. I guess I will be taking my 720 nm IR filter on my next trip to Arches!

Thanks Larry! You will definitely want to bring that filter.

BTW, when I was wondering about IR and thinking about getting into it, I had bought a 720nm filter that I could try out easily and see if I liked it. Which I did, and then I later converted the Nikon D7100 which was a camera I had that was just sitting around gathering dust, I hadn't used it in years so I thought sending it in for surgery to convert it to a 590nm IR was safe enough.

One of the things I quickly came to not like about using the 720nm filter, was that it was basically just like using a 10 stop ND filter. So it was nice when I converted the D7100 over to the 590nm, because my exposures went back to being normal, so that was great.
