Antelope House

One of the ruins in Canyon de Chelly National Monument is named for the rock art adjacent to the ruins depicting antelope amongst other animals and art motifs. Our knowledge of the ruins themselves is limited beyond the fact that they were built prior to the 1300's by people now called Ancestral Puebloans. Hopi tribes farmed the valley bottoms after the original inhabitants left around 1300 AD but did not actually live in the valley. They moved to mesa tops for their villages and the area was settled by the Navajos who have continued the farming practices originally used by the Ancestral Puebloans to this day.

First off the rock art that is the namesake for the site.

A close up view of the ruins.

For the record that is not graffiti above the ruins to the left on the cliff wall and the symbol is not an uncommon one for the artwork associated with Ancestral Puebloans.

A wider view.

Finally the view from the rim of the canyon.

Very nice Alan. The antelope look so realistic on that wall. And thanks for explaining that one rock art as my first thought was graffiti. It is really amazing how there was a culture of people in all of those cliff houses that suddenly departed with no confirmed reason.

Wonderful place. I have been there once, but only on the southern rim at all the view points. Jaw dropping beauty!
Next time I want to get down on the floor. Would love to find the shot made by Curtis.
Very nice and interesting works, Alan!
