An afternoon in Venice ( warning lots of images)

75min on the train right into the heart of Venice. After the 95F heat in Verona, Venice was a slightly cooler 91F but the slight breeze from the sea made it feel much better. It was lunchtime by the time we arrived and we had 5hrs before our return train left so off to the tourist hotspots.

It wouldn't be Venice without Gondolas

The Grand Canal from the Rialto Bridge, The Rialto Bridge area was the only really busy place in Venice

My wife went off to the Venice Biennale to see an artwork of a friend and I wandered around trying to get a decent images of the Rialto bridge before walking down to St Marks for a look. You might be able to spot a small puddle on the left behind the hat stall, more on this next.

St Mark's Square is the lowest area in Venice, a mere 2.5ft above high tide but with low pressure, high tide and a southerly wind any storm surge can cause the water to rise through the drainage grills in the square and start to flood the square. So on my return, the small puddle had turned into this. It really isn't very large, my 12mm lens has exaggerated it. Lots of work straightening verticals. I also shot a series of 12mm vertical shots for a panorama but Photoshop/ lightroom struggles with 12mm shots when the lens is tilted up a lot so I am still working on them. I find this image unbalanced and may stretch and lower the left hand side to make it more like the first image of the square.

That is it, a brilliant 5hrs in Venice. I didn't expect to get any decent images and was delighted because of the minor flooding ( Acque Alte) I got excellent reflections of the church and campanile. Why go at the hottest time of the year? Friends had bought non refundable tickets for the Opera and flights to Verona but unfortunately couldn't go, so we had a cheap holiday otherwise we would not have gone in July or August, it is just too hot. Nice way to spend your time waiting for a train - a beautiful city to visit even if it was a bit on the warm side (downright hot for my tastes). The reflections on St. Mark's Square are quite striking even if it is a bit of a problem for the city inhabitants. Looking back at the Rialto Bridge does give a good sense of the volume of tourists with the crowded walkway.

Wow Ken! I almost feel like I was there.

#1 is as good of a photo as I have seen from Venice! That one is so awesome!

This group could make a great series of post cards.
