A winter vine.

This plant (I think a Clematis) is on a trail I often walk by. The recent snow and frost combined to create small bearded gnomes hanging from the tree.
For the botanists out there I'm happy to have an ID on the plant.

Interesting looking plant with the snow caps on the flowers. I think you have correctly identified it as a clematis - specifically C. vitalba also known as "old man's beard".

Mine is certainly more gray now than it was when the image in my signature was taken but it isn't all white. Yet.
