A Window into the Heavens

Up at Independence Pass in Colorado last month, the forecast was for partly cloudy to then clear up during the early night. Which is perfect. At least for me. I love when the clouds act like a curtain to the heavens at night. This was early on, the Milky Way was still lower so it's not in the part of the sky that is open, but for me that's okay. As much as I enjoy the Milky Way, I also do really enjoy the stars.

This is a single image captured with my old reliable Nikon D850 and Sigma 14mm f1.8 combo. It's such a reliable combination, it's always in focus. When things are perhaps a bit crazy at night, I can set it up in 3 minutes and get it imaging and not have to worry about it all during the night.

The clouds add a bit of mystery to the scene! Sometimes when it's totally socked in, I'll give up on astro and go to bed, but other times there's a chance you can come away with a winner like this.

I appreciate that Michael. I watch the weather reports pretty close, so if it is partly cloudy at sunset as the forecast I look to see if it's forecasted to clear up during the night, which this was. That's when I will set up as so often magic can happen as the clouds clear. I am with you, if the forecast is for clouds all night, I will usually not set up my gear and take advantage of actually being able to sleep during the night. :)
