A Herd of Squirrels

While running yesterday at Huntington Beach along the bike path I came across several herds of squirrels in the grass next to it. It was the strangest feeling as I was running and I came upon the first herd, it was almost like there was a wave on the ground as the squirrels ran across the pathway in front of me. It was the oddest sight and feeling, almost like the ground had turned liquid.

I then stopped at the second one and just barely got a shot off before they scampered off and hid. Finally there was one squirrel who just didn't seem to care, so I could get a close up shot of him.

Nice Jim, sometimes those ground squirrels will just stand up on their hind feet and become motionless, which makes a great image.

Interesting that they hang out in groups. The squirrels in my area aren't quite that gregarious.
10 years ago there were none. They have slowly been growing in #. I don't know where the first ones came from, I am guessing they played frogger and made it across PCH from the housing area's on the east side of PCH. A couple of years ago it looked like the city was working on eliminating them as there was so many holes and tunnels in the grass where people walk and run it seemed potentially dangerous if people aren't careful. But this year is the worst I have ever seen. So maybe they gave up, or maybe someone complained that they were trying to control them? Not sure.

Sounds like an interesting experience. Video?
Monika... now where were you when I was running and could have used that great idea?

So no video... just a quick 10 sec stop to shoot and then back to running.

I was probably hanging back from the moose that decided to escort me & my dog down the trail....

Perhaps it's a litter as the close up look like a youngster. Fun photos. Jim
