We had another clear night all last night so I took the opportunity to re-shoot the Great Carina Nebula, NGC3372. I had a bit of trouble with some wonky guiding early in the evening, caused (it seems) by my having failed to lock the AM5 mount after polar alignment, but I got it back in gear...
My latest solar image, shot this afternoon (when I should have been out shooting the autumn leaves near here; I got summoned back to consult on the colour we're painting our new house, since the paint they delivered was *not* the colour we had wanted, and by the time that was sorted, it was too...
The last of my three targets from the other night was totally impromptu--I just went through the ASIAIR app to look for anything that would be high enough not to be blocked by my house, and far enough from the moon to not be outshone. The one I chose was an open cluster called "Trumpler 24", and...
My second target of the night this past Sunday was NGC4945, a spiral galaxy that we look at edge-on in the constellation Centaurus, 11.7 mly away. Shot with a one-shot colour camera (ASI533MC-Pro) on an 80mm refractor with 0.8x reducer/flattener and processed in Pixinsight and Photoshop.
Ever since I got into astrophotography, my attitude toward the end of summer and the onset of autumn with the prospect of winter just around the corner has changed immensely. Whereas before I saw the ever-earlier dusk and the longer nights as something to dread, now that I have a greater...
You know how sometimes you're surprised by a clear night and find that you hadn't planned out what you might photograph if the conditions were to permit? Well, that happened to me the other night. It was a spectacularly clear day all day, and predictions were for cloud to roll in that evening...
The other night was the first night with clear skies that I can remember so I quickly got my telescope set up and planned a session to get as many exposures of this target as I could before dawn. In the end, the clouds stayed away for just over eight hours, so I had plenty of material to work...
Here is the sun as it appeared over New Zealand on April Fool's Day 2023. I had not planned on shooting the sun that day, but it was perfectly clear out all day and I figured "why waste an opportunity?". My data acquisition is getting a bit more streamlined, as is the processing part of the...
During the lunar eclipse of November 2022, I was lucky enough to have no guests at the lodge we run in Oamaru, New Zealand, and to have a perfectly clear night ideal for a night of shooting. I even had the perfect spot from which to shoot the scene--a newly poured foundation for the house we're...
Back in June of 2022 we had a string of clear nights over Oamaru, New Zealand, and I was able to train my telescope on this southern target, which is relatively challenging to process. I'm quite new at this, so any tips would be welcome!

Hi all, I'm new to this site and also am new to the world of solar imaging, so apologies if this is all rather amateurish! Last May, I attended a dark skies forum near where I live in the South Island of New Zealand, and there one of the participants brought along something I'd never seen in...
