    SH2-221 A very dim object

Wow, looks way better than the NASA images if it's the same comet that was in the news about a week ago.

    Upgraded to DxO PhotoLabs 9

I don't use DxO, so I asked ChatGPT: https://chatgpt.com/share/693849e3-f4e4-8013-ab1c-6d8698a386b4 Apparently, it comes set to automatically save settings as a sidecar file type .dop in addition to the app's database. That action can be turned off.

    Sigma Foveon-based Cameras

For almost 10 years, Sigma has been developing a Full-Frame three-layer sensor and are still currently at it. They don't have the benefit of the old Foveon guys so it sounds to me like they've started from scratch only having Foveon's intellectual property to hand.

    Sigma Foveon-based Cameras

Yes, I too have stuck with an early model, the SD10 whose "improved" sensor gained micro-lenses, thereby raising the max ISO from 400 to a whopping 800 non-extended. I keep the ISO at always 100. The SD10 produces a 3.4MP image 2268x1512px, much "bigger" than my 2K monitor, so no problem there...

    My Squirrel

Excellent opportunity. The squirrels around here on the property disappear at Warp 10 up a tree or into the woods as soon as they spot a human.

    Sigma Foveon-based Cameras

For what it's worth, the only other Company to produce a Foveon-based hand-held camera was Polaroid - the x530 model, made in China. I had one for a short while, came cheap new-in-box from the Ukraine. Wasn't bad as a point-and-shoot model...

    Sigma Foveon-based Cameras

Sigma Aizu Japan did acquire but then shut down the U.S.-based Foveon Company but, presumably, have retained their intellectual property while trying to develop a full-frame 1:1:1 "Foveon" three-layer sensor for about the last ten years to the general disappointment of Foveonistas worldwide...

    Best Image Stabilization Ever!

LDN1400 Dark Matter in Holiday Colors

I just accidentally deleted my earlier post but fortunately you quoted it in full. So, talking about the hue of celestial bodies ... So I extracted the hues from the original and added then as a new layer. The problem with that was that all levels got a color because I had set the Lightness to...

    Photographing the Moonrise or Moonset

Thanks! The super-moon layer was captured originally by a 4.7 MP Sigma SD15 and a 200mm lens. Quite a lucky shot but still needed a ton of work in post! Interesting thought ... focus-bracketing something that far away. I guess modern lenses can do that (no hard stop at exactly infinity).

    Photographing the Moonrise or Moonset

Sorry about TMI! So back to the rising or setting full moon and camera settings a la https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exposure_value : f/11 at 400 ISO and say 1/30 sec comes to about 14 EV, so the moon in your parts is 4 EV brighter than AI says it is ... and f/13 is 6 EV brighter. After...

    Photographing the Moonrise or Moonset

For example: Observe that, if you wanted to use the oft-quoted f/11, you can see at-a-glance that the speed is an off-putting 1/8 sec (because the moon moves).

    Photographing the Moonrise or Moonset

May I mention camera settings? It has been said by AI: Now suppose f/5.6 is your favorite f/number for moonshots and you are set to 100 ISO: Since Ev=log2((N^2)/t) then 2^10=(N^2/t)=1024. So t = (5.6^2)/1024 = about 1/30 sec ** see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exposure_value If you shoot...

    What is "Middle Gray"?

Yes. However, DPR is showing that processing from raw to RGB is generally not linear. I had one model which, in extended 50 ISO was ,like the Ricoh, dead straight up to 255. On the other hand, some OM cameras gain "DR" just by considerably flattening the highlight part of that curve. DPR's...

    What is "Middle Gray"?

Yes, I've done that with the GIMP, too. Quite useful! In fact, at one point this year I had accidentally configured it such that it only exported Linear images ... not quite so useful, grump. Ah, yes, the classic red flower petals with no greens, ergo 100% HSV saturated, often where someone...

    What is "Middle Gray"?

If we like cloud contrast, I believe ETTR could reduce cloud contrast because many cameras' raw to RGB show an S-shaped function: image courtesy of DP Review Derived from photos of a Stouffer 21-step transmission wedge normalized to set the mid-tone (+0.0) output as 118/255. Clouds often...
