    Jupiter & Moons

My first attempt at planetary imaging - here is Jupiter and 4 of its largest moons (Jupiter has somewhere between 80 and 95 moons!). Unfortunately, the giant red spot was on the other side when I captured this, but I'll try again next month. Hopefully, I'll have better seeing so I can get a...

    Pacman Nebula (NGC281)

I was thinking that I was going to need more data, but the result turned out pretty good so I decided to go ahead and publish it anyway.

    Pacman Nebula (NGC281)

No, the camera only captures visible light.

    Pacman Nebula (NGC281)

The "Pacman Nebula" (aka NGC281) is an emission nebula about 6500 light-years away, named for its resemblance to the video game character (a game I played WAY too much when in college). The "mouth" of the Pacman appears dark in optical images because light is obscured by dust and gas, but in...

    Crescent Nebula (NGC6888)

Thanks, Jim. I'm pretty pleased with the result as well.

    Crescent Nebula (NGC6888)

The Crescent Nebula (aka NGC6888) is an emission nebula about 5000 light-years from Earth. It is formed by the fast stellar wind from a Wolf-Rayet star colliding with and energizing the slower moving wind ejected by the star when it became a red giant 250,000 - 400,000 years ago. The result of...

Super Blue Moon over San Diego Skyline

I was near the Sheraton, but most of the photographers were a bit west of me between the Sheraton and the Hilton (near the public parking lot). Funny about your "neighbors". There was no where in OC to shoot the super moon???

Super Blue Moon over San Diego Skyline

Hi Jim, I think you meant the Sheraton (not the Hilton) and yes, I was right next to it. There were probably 100 other photographers just west of me. I'm sorry we missed each other. My wife and I did a little picnic while we waited - all we needed was a bottle fo wine. :) Bill

Super Blue Moon over San Diego Skyline

Yeah, but it's not exactly what I was aiming for. On the other hand, if I had been in the correct spot, the moon wouldn't have risen out of the muck yet. Conditions were truly horrible last night.

Super Blue Moon over San Diego Skyline

Very cool. I chose that iconic building as the foreground subject for this event. My plan was to capture the moon "sitting" on the tip of the building, but I didn't quite get it - I needed to be a bit farther west.

Super Blue Moon over San Diego Skyline

I was hoping for clear skies for last night's "Super Blue Moon", but monsoonal moisture created a thick layer of muck that obscured the moon as it was rising over the San DIego skyline. I still managed to get this shot, though, so it wasn't a total bust. Update - made the local news! Click...

    Trifid Nebula

Thanks, Jim. No filters since this target contains a reflection nebula in addition to the emission nebula.

    Trifid Nebula

The Trifid Nebula (aka M20) is a colorful nebula in a star-forming region of the Milky Way. Its name means 'three-lobe'. The object is an unusual combination of an open cluster of stars, an emission nebula (the relatively dense, reddish-pink portion), a reflection nebula (the mainly blue...
