Only a Memory Now

In light of the news that Sunny broke to us about all of the restrictions that Yosemite is putting into place as to where Horsetail Falls on Fire can be captured at this year, this is from down along the Merced River in an area that is now off limits. I captured this 12 years ago, and I am really so glad I have it.

That is a beautiful image Jim, and like many icons that have disappeared or changed over the years will be a real memory.

Great shot Jim! Glad you got it before all these restrictions. Are you going this year? I'm planning to be there 20-23rd this month.

Jim,
Excellent shot! I think I stood at the very exact spot and took 1 last year. I don't think the horsetail falls is going to happen this year, not because of restrictions but due to lack of moisture. There is no snow on top of el cap and no moisture is forecasted. Here's todays webcam screen grab

This is exceptional, Jim. I wish I had gotten this at some time in the past.

Thanks Shibu! If there is snow or moisture I will try to go, it will be great to meet up.

Just remember many years of the 14 prime days for seeing the falls on fire, it often only shows 3 out of those 14 days. I am fortunate that I usually only go when the conditions are ripe for it. I have met people there that have said they had been coming 10 years in a row and finally that year when I met them they finally got to see it.

Yes, that is a nice take. You can still go to that spot, you just have to walk a ways. More than I want to walk though. Especially after dark.

Not this year you can't...
Sure you can, you just can’t park nearby. You can park and walk from the El Capitan straight away, you can park at the Yosemite Lodge area and walk from there, you just can’t park anywhere on north side or south side drive between Yosemite Lodge and the El Capitan cross over. (Or on the cross over.)

Yes, I see now. I checked with the park in December, they didn't tell me that that were going to block access along the river. Glad you brought that up. Don't think there will be much snow on the valley floor at that time. I did mark 4 or 5 places on my topo map on the other side of the road that have good views from the south side drive that are accessible by the valley trail...….
