Thursday's Task 7-18-24-3-Enhanced-SR.jpg

Thursday’s Task: Deconstructed landscape. Definition: deconstructed landscape photographs depict the various smaller areas of photographic interest within the overall landscape scene. I previously used this theme, Small Scene Landscape, for Thursday’s Task, August 24 two years ago—before I knew it had a name!

My examples below:

Tremont, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN

Alan, beautiful images all! I especially love the forest trail, your first image, and the Zen Garden image too––nice composition for each! All your images work well for this Task. The Latourell Falls image taken with your 800mm is a perfect approach to this Task too. Thank you for sharing all of them!

Sometimes when I am out photographing, these kinds of images are all I come home with - never knew they had their own name ...

Michael, excellent images and perfect examples for this week’s Task! The Green Arms branches and the Larch Mountain fall fallen leaf images are particularly nice—but the Solitary Rock and the Wahkeena Creek images are noteworthy and very well composed. My favorite is the Tumbleweed and Lichen image—love the limited color palette and well composed deconstructed landscape image.

I, like Ken, learned that these were called Intimate Landscapes. They were popularized by Eliot Porter in his books: In Wildness Is the Preservation of the World" and "Intimate Landscapes." Those books had a tremendous influence on my photography.

Larry, beautiful images you’ve shared (thank you)—I find many favorites among these: the Ice Flow at Red Rock Park, the Floating Rock (is it really? 😉) and the Rifle Falls State Park. I love the Summer Blossom—especially the out of focus background too—nice image!

Beautiful images Doug and thank you for sharing them—and a nice variety of subjects too! I love the Sand Mule Ears image—gorgeous image. The Hoh rainforest is a beautiful composition in green—nice! And the Swift River definitely appears so in this perfect composition—you did good! Yes, I’ve also seen the term “Intimate Landscape” too. I‘ve recently read quite a few photography publications describing the term “Deconstructed Landscape” with examples. Next time, I’ll use “Initimate Landscapes” in a Thursday’s Task—so it won’t appear repetitive! 😉

Dan, love your variety of examples posted—thank you for sharing! The tree bark patterns have a nice abstract feel—great captures. I also favor the fallen leaves in several of your images—whether a single leaf or many strewn about in each composition. The swarm of butterflies creates a memorable image—very nice!

Trent, you’ve shared some beautiful and unusual images—the ice sculptures and the frosted wire fence are well seen scenes! I like the fungus wearing the snow hat too!
