San Jose Badlands

Within the San Juan Basin in northern New Mexico are many sections of badlands. The San Jose Badlands are about 15 miles north of Cuba, NM, right on the Continental Divide. This section is on BLM land, with a lot of photographic potential in a relatively small space.

I was scratching my head over what kind of badlands existed around San Jose besides the evaporation ponds along the SF Bay shorelines when I clicked on the thread - I had no idea this place in New Mexico with the same name existed.

Interesting looking place made more so with these neat B&Ws. Excellent work with the skies/clouds. My two favorites are the first and last images showing the wider views of this place.

That's really so cool Michael! I hadn't heard of that location before. I am going to have to check this one out some more as I am often in the area.

I really like how you captured it, and B&W shows off the details and textures so nicely. My favorites are #1 and 4.

The last one is my favorite. I've spent just a little time there. Also Lybrook & Ojito (besides the well known Bisti & De-Na-Zin).

I love all the badlands within the San Juan Basin! There is a good website describing each of them here ... PhotoTrek New Mexico
I was initially drawn to the area by Mike Spieth's photography ... Mike Spieth photos
Any trip I make to NM will include at least one badlands area, but I haven't made it to Ojito yet, maybe next time.

Yes, that site (PhotoTrek NM) is how I learned about those lesser known badlands. I wouldn't be surprised if Mike Spieth's photos are some of the 1st ones I saw. At Ojito, there are some petros bookended by mesas -- nice sunset shot. I haven't been to the museum in ABQ where the Dino that was excavated there ended up.
