Gold Rush

I spent a long weekend at the beach in Southern California. Before heading over to LAX to pick up a friend from the airport, I photographed downtown Los Angeles during the sunset from a hilltop. It exceeded my expectations.

Very nice indeed Michael! The LA skyline is really cool. The problem can be finding a safe place to shoot it from.

I like where the sun is setting at. Sometimes it's hard in a city environment with limited locations to image from to get it exactly where you might want it to be. But I like for the balance of the image that it's on the right side of the frame. Though I think your idea would be cool too.

Thanks, Alan. Where do you think a perfect placement of the sun would be? I was hoping to see the sun set more towards the tallest skyscrapers.
I was appreciating the fact that you had the sun setting right down in the corner of the silhouettes. I was unaware that wasn't your target :) Getting the exact spot for the desired result is something I usually associate with a local who has scouted out the sunsets in advance and knows where to go. Not an easy fix for someone there for a quick visit.

It certainly wasn't my target; I just got lucky! Before the trip I studied maps of the surrounding area and found Ascot Hills Park. This park northeast of downtown consists of two reasonably tall hills with walking trails. The images I saw of it online made it seem like a good place to get a quality skyline view, and it didn't disappoint. I'd have to return at different times of the year if I really want to get the sun setting amongst the tallest buildings from that vantage point.

And considering how crowded LA is, the crowd on that hilltop at sunset wasn't that dense, thankfully.
