My contribution for the next few Winged Wednesdays will be sparrows. Birders affectionately refer to sparrows as LBRBs (little brown round birds). With the availability of fine optics binoculars and cameras with telephoto lenses, the real beauty of these LBRBs can be fully appreciated.

Botteri's sparrow 900.jpg

Botteri's Sparrow is a rather secretive sparrow of desert grasslands in SE Arizona and coastal prairies of Mexico

Brewer's Sparrow copy.jpg

Brewer's sparrows are sometimes called "the bird without field marks." They adapted their subtle earth-toned colors to their sagebrush habitat.

Chipping sparrow-09384-Edit.jpg

Chipping sparrows have that lovely rusty cap and a black eye stripe. Quite abundant in the grasslands near my home.

Grasshopper sparrow 900.jpg

Grasshopper sparrows are another subtle delicately colored sparrow. Their habitat is grasslands and their primary prey as you probably guessed is grasshoppers.

Fox Sparrow 900.jpg

Fox sparrows were named because their red and gray colors match the colors of the red fox. However, there are regional differences in coloration with the above coloration common in California.

Nice idea Eric.. Your selections are mostly sparrows that I don's see. You have captured them with great clarity.

I will contribute some local sparrows from my area.

The White-throated Sparrow has a beautiful song that makes me think of spring. During the spring migration many pass through our city on their way up north to nest in the Boreal Forest.

I am always very impressed with your photography and your birding skills too.

Another great series, Eric. I didn't much care for sparrows before I learned how to photograph birds from you. You inspired me to get a 500mm telephoto lens and then I could see all of the beautiful detail I was never able to see before. Here are some more sparrows that have not been posted as of yet.

Beautiful set, Doug. I hope you save some sparrow photos for next week. Thanks for giving me a call out. That 500 mm gives a great bokeh. I miss that with my new set-up.
