Looks like many of you have birds that are long gone from my area. It is unseasonable cold here lately. This morning it is -33 C with a strong wind making if feel like -50 degrees.
It always puts me in a state of awe when I see our bird friends surviving at these temperatures. Here is a selection of birds from the last two days in survival mode .

The Mallards have open water due to a power plant upstream that keeps the river open even when very cold. They must be thankful for their coats of duck down For some reason there are always some that don't head south for the winter.

The Bohemian Waxwings congregate by the hundreds (or more) and forage off the urban forest for berries. They have such beautiful color schemes.

My favourite is the Black-capped Chickadee that defies logic to stay alive when they are so tiny.

The Blue Jay is really fluffed up to give that extra layer of insulation.

Brilliant work as expected, Trent. Regrettably, bird populations in my area are down 90% on our Christmas bird counts.
