This juvenile blue heron fell from the nest and did not know how to properly use his wings. It was a sad sight watching him being so lost in his effort to use his wings in any useful manner. A few minutes after this he approached his mother a tried to get her to feed him. He did not know there was a life time of food swimming in the water below him! She flew up to the nest where there were 4 additional juvenile birds read to fly.
It is common for the adults to stop feeding the juvenile birds in the nest when they are ready to fly. They went after her for food and she flew away. The 4 juvenile herons flew from the nest later that day. I do not know what happened to the bird in this photo, I did not see it later this day.
