Last winged Wednesday I posted the males of five species of hummingbirds that I photographed in my yard. This week, I'll post the females of 6 species of Hummingbirds found in my yard during fall migration.
This is a female Broad-tailed hummingbird. Coloration is very similar to the female Rufous Hummingbird. The major differences are the neatly spotted gorgets without a central spot, and the broad tail,
The Rufous hummingbird female is difficult for me to distinguish from the broad-tailed hummingbird. The central rufous spot is an easy tell.
This is a female Calliope hummingbird. Her coloration is similar to the female Rufous and Broad-tailed hummingbirds. However, this is a tiny hummingbird with a short square tail and short bill. They're easy to identify in flight and at the feeders. They are too small to rest on the feeder's perches and drink from the portal at the same time.
