Windows 11 Stinks

I got a new laptop a month ago to use as a backup but also for my Deep Space Astro. It's an HP, with an i5 and a 512sd. It's not blazing fast, but for $500 it serves it's purpose and is fast enough.

The issue though is Windows 11 which came installed on it. Wow... I am so glad I have kept saying No to the free Windows 11 popups that keep coming up on my main laptop, the MSI gaming laptop with a 17.3" screen.

I have only used the new laptop a little so far, but here are my issues.

1. It stacks all of your open windows (of the same type) in the task bar. With Windows 10, it also did that, but you could easily just toggle the option off. I like to see each of my open windows at the bottom. If I have 4 instances of Edge open on the internet, I like seeing all 4 of them individually in the task bar so I can click on which one I want. In Windows 11 they are all stacked, so you have to first mouse over the Edge window in the task bar, then above the task bar, thumbnails of each open Edge is shown, and then you have to look close to see which one it is you want and then move the mouse over it and click. They same for Windows File Explorer (which I use constantly) also. It's a real pain, not intuitive and really slows you down. Now... there is a FIX to this, but it involves editing the Registry, etc, so I haven't messed with it yet.

2. Just simple Copy and Paste. Fortunately you can still do Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V, etc. But if you use the Mouse and the popup window when you left click in File Explorer on a folder or file, they have removed the words Copy, Paste, etc. They are now icons at the bottom of the popup. It does say "Copy as Path" in the Popup, but not sure what that would really mean, or why I would want it. I just want to be able to copy an object whether its a folder or file. And then, just a few minutes ago I was copy and pasting on the new Windows 11 laptop some files from an external drive as I continue to get it set up. I had already clicked on a folder and Copy and Pasted it onto the C Drive. So now I went back to the external drive, clicked on another folder to Copy it, and clicked on the Copy Icon at the bottom of the popup window, and it actually started to Paste in the folder I had already copied to the C drive. Maybe it thought I wanted to "Copy" that first folder to now this other folder? Ugh.... so I stopped it, had to delete the unwanted folder, and then used the Short Cut keys to do it.

A couple of simple things I guess, but they are really bugging me. I totally get upgrading software for security and enhancement, but to remove core abilities that have been part of a software for 30 years is just a really bad move.

I just had a new hard drive installed and a fresh Windows 10- installed., I asked the tech to install 11 and he said you don't want 11.

That's good confirmation Ben. I always wait a while anyway when a new version of Windows comes out, it's why I haven't upgraded my main laptop or desktop yet to Windows 11. But with the new laptop I bought, I had no choice. Maybe I should see if HP can get me Windows 10 on it. Probably not, but so far I sure don't like Windows 11.

I have setup Photoshop on it, because I have thought of using it to compile my timelapses while I use my main Laptop. It's a mindless task that is perfect for a backup laptop.

Well I also just found now that in order to get to both "New" (to create a new folder) and "Rename" that they are hidden in the Popup menu when you left click a folder. So in order to create a New Folder in an existing Folder (like when I split my timelapses from the 1600 images down into smaller parts) and I left click on a Folder, I then in the Popup have to click on "More Options" which then pops up the old Popup menu with New and Rename, etc... So now to just create a New Folder, I have to do double the clicks.

I have been running Windows 11 on my desktop since late December (upgraded from 10). While some UX changes make you learn new ways to do old things, I am pretty happy with the overall experience so far once the muscle memory has adjusted. My muscle memory is also adjusting to doing things on both Windows 11 as well as MacOS (got a MacBook Pro 14" with the M1 chip).

Your muscle memory might be thinking it’s drunk by having to go back and forth between Windows and Apple. :)

Both of my main computers are Windows 10, so I can’t see getting used to the crippled interface of Windows 11 anytime soon. Hopefully Microsoft will respond to the outcry from many, many users to simply put toggles in place to allow people the choice over their interface.

But I do see your point in that if one is only using a Windows 11 computer, you eventually get use to it, no matter how bad it is.
