Wind Rivers Sunrise

After a few hot, smoky, cloudless days, the weather pattern finally shifted and clouds started coming through. I'd scouted this location the previous afternoon: it was less than a 10 minute walk from camp, which was fortunate as after returning from shooting, I was only partway through pouring my hot cocoa mix into my mug when it started to graupel. The colors were brief, but intense. And just maybe worth the walk in ( 2 half days and 1 full day) ;)

The 1st is to the left & lower than where I shot the pano from.

This is a 5-shot vertical pano.

It was well worth the time! And you got back in time for your hot chocolate, even if you had the pour the bag quicker then you wanted. :)

I really like both of these, I think they stand alone. Though that pano is really spectacular.

The weather that you had come in to great you was why I canceled my backpacking to the Cirque of Towers for the Milky Way and Meteor shower. So I still need to get out there, maybe in September? Or it just might have to wait a year.

What's the latest in a year you have backpacked out there?

That is one seriously nice way to greet a new day. I do like the up close image in #1 but the pano steals the show and has me thinking Wow.

I'll be going back to the Cirque in mid-Sept: driving on the 15th, probably hike partway in. Starting in Sept, there's always a chance of snow. I backpacked in late October or early November one year in the Green River Lakes area and it just rained from about 3 pm on through the next day as I walked out. Makes creek crossings on logs pretty dicey (I just straddled the log & kind of humped along). A handful of years ago there was a massive blowdown in Sept & people had to get choppered out of the Cirque. Horsepackers took all day to get out from Big Sandy Lake, which is just 6 miles in. It's supposed to be a big El Niño year, so we'll see what happens. I really liked going in in late June (which is highly unusual) even though there were few places to camp due to snow & I couldn't cross the creek due to high water. If I were to do that again, I'd pack waders along with microspikes.

It made me very happy.
What's really interesting comparing the shots is that it was a prime lens, so just the difference between a single shot & a stitched pano. I may have been 5' closer on the single shot.

Good info Monika. Not sure if I will do that or not as I may come back too late from California as I head to Minnesota for Fall Colors.
