When Snow Meets the Hoh.

Not a common occurrence but occasionally snow makes it down to almost sea level in the Olympic N.P. rainforests. The first time my wife and I visited the Olympic Peninsula on a March trip from Utah we got a light dusting of snow along the Pacific coast. I didn't think much about it after living in Utah for almost 30 years but the locals were pretty freaked out about it. Shooting in the Hoh rainforest was not particularly fruitful with the light being unkind to the dynamic range of slide film (Velvia 50).

On a much more recent trip to the Hoh I got a chance to see this again with a DSLR instead of film and had much better luck with handling the light extremes that comes with such an event.

C&C always welcome.

Really cool image, Alan (no pun intended). This place would be otherworldly if snow covered the branches of the trees.

I did see snow on the branches during that first visit in 1997 - it's pretty messy on the trails since it is almost constantly sluffing off the branches. A wide brim waterproof hat like a Seattle Sombrero is highly recommended.

I know what you mean about coastal snow and have only seen it a couple times, albiet in Oregon. It does freak out those unacustomed to it. But it does make for some unusual scenery as it does here.

Hey Alan, What an unusual capture. I can imagine the snow freaking some people out. It's kind of like the rare times we get snow down here in SoCal.
