What Once was a Mountain

Mt. Mazama was one of the larger peaks in the Cascade range before it completely blew its lid and left us with Crater Lake instead. While it might have been interesting to watch when it blew up I am not certain where a safe vantage point might have been to observe from. The ash layer that spewed out of the blast is a well known marker in archaeological sites all over the west for 5677 B.C. from Montana down to northern Arizona. This view looks to the north on a crisp fall day.

That is beautiful Alan. Thanks for taking me back to one of my favorite vacations. We went from the Steam Train in Ft Something (can't remember the name) to the Redwoods to Gold Beach to Crater Lake & points in between back 20 years ago!
