Venice Canal & Gondolas

Shot on slide film years ago. I first converted to B&W with a slide duplicating set-up shooting Tri-X, which came out quite well. This is actually a digital conversion after scanning the original slide. I guess now I'd try to get a bit of detail in the shadowed hulls of the boats to separate them a bit more, but the high contrast treatment emphasized the shadows, which were what caught my eye in the first place.

The contrasts are pretty neat here - especially the skewed reflections. I like it.

What are you using for the digital conversion? I had an olde Nikon SuperCoolScan 4000 a number of years ago but the scans really don't have much dynamic range in the scan files.

I dig the patterns and graphic nature of the shot. I'm not sure that adding the shadow detail would improve - the large masses of black are contrasty and striking.

I'd be curious as to how this would look printed with a fat ultrawhite mat.

Thanks for all the comments. Alan, this is scanned with the same scanner. Like you say it doesn't have the best DR, but of course many of my original slides (Fuji Velvia & Provia for the most part in my last 10 years shooting film) are contrasty too.
