Martin wanted to see some WW I sites on my 2nd visit across the pond. After arriving at Heathrow we took the ferry ride from Dover over to Dunkirk. On the 2nd day we drove over to Belgium and explored around the city of Ypres, a major battle area.
The Cloth Hall and city center in Ypres. The Cloth Hall is medieval in origin and was totally demolished in WW I and later re-built to what we see today.

A few miles out of town lies Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest allied cemetery from WW I.

Sadly, many, many of the gravestones have the following inscriptions....

A beautiful old building! What a lot of work to construct that. In the graveyard, it's amazing so many unknown soldiers.

I remember being amazed by just how many there were. But after reading some of the info in the Cloth Hall WW I museum, one gets a hint of understanding.
