The Westport Break

A number of years ago I was touring a portion of the Washington coastline between Willapa Bay and Gray's Harbor just because I had never been there before. When I got to Westport on the south end of Gray's Harbor I discovered that this wasn't exactly a photographer's mecca and unless you were into fishing it wasn't an exciting destination. I wandered over to the jetty which was right next to my motel and discovered that there were some fairly serious swells from some of the storms that were coming through so I decided maybe I could shoot waves and grabbed my camera.

Then I noticed that there were very few waves that weren't being eyeballed by the local surfers. I decided that the best way to entertain myself was to shoot the surfers since I had never tried that before. I took an incredible number of shots and managed to get a couple of workable shots out of the session.

This guy in the next two images turned out to be one of the local surfing heroes. I was making a preliminary pass at my session results on my laptop while waiting for dinner at a restaurant and the waitress recognized this guy immediately and gave me a bit of background. With the right swell direction the Westport Jetty does get some very ridable waves and whenever those conditions arise the surfers come out to play. This guy was fun to watch/shoot since he almost always got a good ride out of the swells he selected.

I liked the way the surfboard cuts the water in this one:

C&C always welcome.

Very nice surfing action here Alan. It looks like these guys could surf along side the better known SoCal beach surfers. I like all of the shots here.
