The Coos Bay Rail Line

The Coos Bay Rail Line is a 134 mile rail line in Oregon that runs from the town of Coquille to Eugene. If you have driven on the road (OR126) from Eugene to Florence you have seen the rails for this line in several places along the highway. I have seen and crossed the tracks on many occasions but have never witnessed an active locomotive pulling cars on them. Turns out the train typically runs two trains per day on the tracks but usually very early in the morning and late in the evening. Good thing since I decided to shoot some views of the tracks as it runs along the Siuslaw River and next to Stagecoach Road. Drone shot at 70mm.

If you want to see a video (just over an hour) of this rail line showing trains along a lot of the route there is one that was made by a Eugene railroad fan who goes by the name Railfan Dan. He knows the roads around the rail line well enough to be able to drive just ahead of the trains and then launch a Mavic 3 Pro to shoot footage of them along the route.

C&C always welcome.

That's a cool train track. I like how you got it curving. And you did this with the Mavic. That's pretty cool. How high above the tracks did you have it?

Thanks Jim - I think I was about 15' over the tracks. This is with a 70mm lens so what shows as the foreground isn't as close as it looks. Most of the trees overhanging the rails get trimmed by the train passing by every day so the overhanging branches are a good guide to the height of the train :)

Alan, You are a master at using a photo drone, you always come up with something new.. I don't even know if I've ever taken a photo of a track. At least I've got another idea. 👍

Thanks Peter - I am always trying to figure out new ways to shoot things with a tripod not anchored to the ground :) Hope to see what kind of idea you come up with now.
