This juvenile Blue Heron fell from the nest and had not learned to use his wings. He splashed around in the lake edge making all sorts of noise. He finally spotted his parent and attacked her to give him some food, not understinding he was standing is a lifetime food supply! The adult walked around him and flew up to the nest where 4 additional juveniles were waiting. They attacked so ferociously she quickly flew out of the nest. It was her last visit to the nest, the juveniles were left to fend for themselves! This is a behavior I whitnessed in 2 other nests, when the chicks reached a certain age, the adults stopped bringing food to the nest and the chicks had to learn to fly and feed themselves.
