Stormy Day On Arcadia Beach

My wife and I were at first a bit disappointed that our last full day of a week long vacation in Oregon was a stormy. We ended up having one of our nicest walks on this beach just south of Cannon. A bit of rain made it a fast and exciting return, but didn't result in an actual soaking. Of course I was thinking B&W while shooting these.

The next shot was taken about where those people are visible below the sea stack.

I love this beach and have shot it on many occasions - usually in mid winter with stormy atmospherics. For my eyes you got some great clouds to play with and your B&W processing did a nice job of showing them off. #4 is one of my favorite views if you can get good clouds for a sunrise.

I am going to correct your location - this is just south of the Tolovana area at the south end of Cannon Beach but north of Hug Point.

Alan, you may be right about the final destination on our walk - closer to Cannon/Tolovana area. We started at Arcadia and walked north, then turned tail when the squalls blew in.

Hey Jim, I am trying to pick favorites but it’s almost a 4 way tie as I scroll through. I will try to order them in favorite order though. #4, 2, 1, 3. But again they are all awesome. What a great walk you must have had.

When my wife and I moved to Vancouver Cannon Beach was one of our primary destinations along the coast and we would make several trips per year to that town. I used to go out to Hug Point and Arcadia Beach for sunrise shoots every time we stayed out there.

This was my first time down at Arcadia and I much preferred the quiet of this area to the main beach at Cannon where we visited last time. I've corrected my caption on the first shot - it was taken from a pull-out view from 101.

Holy cow, what a stupendous set! I honestly am having trouble picking a favorite from these - each one has something to say. Being a 'Grand Vista' guy, I love that first one. Almost has the look of a drone vantage point, very nice. #2 is dramatic and I really like the partial reflections of the clouds in the damp sand in the foreground. #3 is a very nice composition with the tight framing and those really interesting foreground sand patterns (or is that water?). And #4 has the great sky with the people (is that the 2 of you?) in it for scale. In spite of suggestions to the contrary I often strive to keep people out of my shot, and it often feels 'cheesy' when I see some poses that are used too often, but in this shot it really works well.

Truly a fantastic set, and I am not even considering the excellent B&W processing technique shown here. Very inspirational stuff...
